CULTURAL INSPIRATION: From Yirrkala, home to the Gumatj clan, in the sea off Caledon Bay, in the Gulf of Carpentaria comes this beautifully detailed “bark painting” representing the aftermath of a symbolic fight. The fight is over territory involving two Ancestral Beings—the Crocodile and the Stingray. The other aquatic animals, which are the supporters, watch the two combatants as they attempt to organize a peace-making ceremony referred to as “Makarrata”.
